This Apple Upside-Down Cake is a moist and buttery dessert featuring tender apples caramelized in brown sugar, baked beneath a fluffy vanilla cake. Perfect for fall gatherings or a cozy dessert at home.

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened, for batter)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Melt 1/4 cup butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar until dissolved. Pour mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  3. Arrange sliced apples evenly over the brown sugar mixture.
  4. In a mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  7. Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Mix until just combined.
  8. Pour the batter evenly over the apples in the cake pan.
  9. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then carefully invert onto a serving plate. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Best served warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best results.
  • Make sure to invert the cake while still warm to prevent sticking.
