Ingredients

  • 12 ounces (340g) bowtie pasta
  • 24 ounces (680g) marinara sauce (or your favorite pasta sauce)
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef or Italian sausage (optional)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Cook the bowtie pasta in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté onion and garlic until fragrant.
  • If using ground beef or sausage, cook it in the skillet until browned. Drain excess fat.
  • Stir in marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  • In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta, ricotta cheese, and half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Add the sauce mixture and stir until combined.
  • Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  • Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Add vegetables like spinach, mushrooms, or zucchini for added nutrition.
  • Swap ground beef or sausage with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
  • Substitute marinara sauce with Alfredo sauce for a creamy variation.
  • Mix in red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
