Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 package (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 cup filling of choice (cinnamon sugar, sausage, cheese, etc.)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter until warm (but not too hot). Add to the flour mixture.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract (if using). Gradually add in the remaining flour, a little at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick.
  7. Spread your desired filling (cinnamon sugar, cheese, or sausage) over the dough.
  8. Roll the dough tightly from the short end and cut into 1-inch slices.
  9. Place the slices on a greased baking sheet and cover them. Let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  11. Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Brush the rolls with melted butter and serve warm.

Notes

  • You can customize the filling based on your preferences. For a sweet option, use cinnamon and sugar. For a savory option, consider using shredded cheese, cooked sausage, or vegetables.
  • The rolls are best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for 1-2 days.
