Tender, slow-braised beef short ribs infused with aromatic Chinese five-spice, garlic, and ginger, creating a rich and deeply flavorful dish perfect for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs beef short ribs
  • 2 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2-inch piece fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Oil for searing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine Chinese five-spice powder, minced garlic, grated ginger, soy sauce, and brown sugar to create the marinade.
  3. Place beef short ribs in a resealable bag or dish and coat thoroughly with the marinade. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best flavor.
  4. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the ribs for 3 to 4 minutes per side until well browned.
  5. Transfer the ribs to an oven-safe pot. Pour the remaining marinade and water over the ribs. Cover tightly with a lid or foil.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 3 hours, or until the meat is fork-tender and easily pulls away from the bone.

Notes

  • For deeper flavor, marinate the ribs overnight.
  • Skim excess fat from the sauce before serving if desired.
  • Serve with steamed rice or stir-fried vegetables.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
