This Classic Italian Tiramisu is a deliciously creamy and rich dessert made with layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone cheese, and a dusting of cocoa powder. The perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness, this traditional Italian dessert will transport you straight to Italy. Perfect for any occasion!

Ingredients

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups brewed espresso or strong coffee, cooled
  • 1 tablespoon coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 1 package ladyfinger biscuits (savoiardi)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting)
  • Dark chocolate shavings (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cream mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and granulated sugar together until the mixture becomes pale and thick.
  2. Add mascarpone: Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese into the egg mixture until smooth and well combined.
  3. Whip the cream: In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Carefully fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until smooth.
  4. Soak the ladyfingers: Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the cooled espresso (or coffee liqueur if using), ensuring they are soaked but not soggy.
  5. Assemble the tiramisu: Arrange a layer of soaked ladyfingers at the bottom of a 9×13-inch dish. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers. Repeat with another layer of soaked ladyfingers and top with the remaining mascarpone mixture.
  6. Chill and serve: Refrigerate the tiramisu for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. Before serving, dust the top generously with cocoa powder and sprinkle with chocolate shavings if desired.

Notes

  • For best results, let the tiramisu rest overnight to allow the flavors to meld together.
  • You can substitute the coffee liqueur with a splash of rum for a different flavor profile.
  • Ensure you don’t soak the ladyfingers for too long; they should be moist but not falling apart.
