Indulge in the comforting flavors of Meatball Parmesan, a classic Italian-inspired casserole dish featuring juicy homemade meatballs, rich marinara sauce, and gooey melted cheese. Perfect for cozy dinners, this versatile recipe is ideal for serving over pasta, polenta, or in sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup dry breadcrumbs or 4 slices stale white bread
  • 2 tablespoons milk, cream, or buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, divided into thirds
  • 1½ teaspoons dried parsley
  • 1½ teaspoons dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • pounds ground beef or a blend of ground beef and ground lamb
  • 2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • ½ pound fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into 2-inch pieces

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking sheet with foil and nonstick spray.
  • Soak breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes until liquid is absorbed.
  • Mix soaked breadcrumbs with eggs, salt, pepper, ⅓ cup Parmesan, parsley, basil, and oregano.
  • Gently incorporate ground meat into the mixture without overworking.
  • Form 1½-inch meatballs and place them on the baking sheet.
  • Bake meatballs for 20 minutes or until browned and cooked through.
  • Reduce oven temperature to 375°F (190°C). In a baking dish, spread marinara sauce, arrange meatballs, and cover with more sauce and Parmesan.
  • Bake for 20-30 minutes until hot and bubbly.
  • Top each meatball with mozzarella and remaining Parmesan, then bake until cheese is melted and golden.
  • Cool for 5-10 minutes and serve as desired.

Notes

  • For leaner meatballs, use ground turkey or chicken mixed with beef or lamb for moisture.
  • Add provolone or fontina for a unique cheese twist.
  • Can be fried instead of baked for a golden crust.
  • Freeze cooked meatballs for up to 3 months and thaw before reheating.
