This cream cheese frosting recipe is smooth, creamy, and perfectly tangy, making it the ideal topping for carrot cake, red velvet cake, and more. With just a few ingredients, you’ll have a rich and velvety frosting that everyone will love.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz (226g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (more if needed for desired consistency)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  • Cream the Butter and Cream Cheese:
In a large bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese and unsalted butter using a hand mixer or stand mixer until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add Vanilla:
Add the vanilla extract and mix until fully incorporated.
  • Gradually Add Powdered Sugar:
Slowly add powdered sugar, about 1 cup at a time, and continue to beat on low speed until the sugar is fully mixed in. Once all the sugar is added, increase the speed to medium-high and beat for another 2-3 minutes until the frosting is smooth, fluffy, and spreadable. Add more powdered sugar if needed to achieve your desired thickness.
  • Adjust Consistency (if necessary):
If the frosting is too thick, add a teaspoon of milk or heavy cream at a time until you reach your desired consistency. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar.
  • Frost Your Cake or Cupcakes:
Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or any baked good of your choice. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Make sure both the cream cheese and butter are at room temperature before starting. This will help create a smooth and lump-free frosting.
  • You can also add a bit of lemon zest or juice for a subtle citrusy twist!
  • If you’re preparing ahead of time, you can store this frosting in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just let it come to room temperature before using.
