Crispy Chilli Chicken

This crispy chilli chicken is a popular Indo-Chinese dish featuring crispy fried chicken tossed in a spicy, sweet, and tangy sauce with peppers, onions, and garlic. It’s a flavorful and satisfying dish perfect as a main or appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 500g boneless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)
  • 2 tbsp plain flour (all-purpose flour)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Oil for deep frying
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 green pepper, sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1-inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 spring onions, chopped
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • 1 tbsp chilli sauce (adjust to spice preference)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 2 tbsp water

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix chicken pieces with egg, cornflour, plain flour, salt, and pepper until well coated.
  2. Heat oil in a deep pan and fry the chicken pieces in batches until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  3. In a wok or large pan, heat 1-2 tablespoons of oil and sauté chopped garlic and ginger for a few seconds.
  4. Add sliced onions and green pepper, stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly softened.
  5. Add soy sauce, tomato ketchup, sweet chilli sauce, chilli sauce, vinegar, sugar, and water. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Add the fried chicken to the sauce and toss until evenly coated.
  7. Cook for another minute or two until everything is well combined.
  8. Garnish with chopped spring onions and serve hot.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of chilli sauce to control the spice level.
  • Use boneless chicken thighs for juicier results.
  • Serve immediately for the best crispy texture.
