These Hungarian-inspired cheese sticks are easy to make and perfect for parties, game nights, or whenever you crave a deliciously unique appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 2 large potatoes, peeled and boiled
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or a mix of cheeses)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika (Hungarian if available)
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Mash the potatoes in a bowl until smooth. Let them cool slightly.
  2. Add shredded cheese, egg, flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and parsley. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. On a floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Cut into sticks or fingers using a knife or pizza cutter.
  5. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  6. Fry the sticks in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with sour cream or your favorite dip.

Notes

  • You can use leftover mashed potatoes for this recipe.
  • Add chili flakes for a spicier version.
  • Make it gluten-free by swapping flour with a gluten-free blend.
  • These freeze well before frying — just freeze on a tray and transfer to a bag once solid.
