This Easy French Apple Cake is a moist, buttery dessert filled with tender apple chunks and a hint of rum. Simple yet elegant, it’s perfect for any occasion and requires minimal effort.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (90g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons dark rum (or apple juice)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 tablespoons (113g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 3 large apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch round cake pan or line with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until pale and creamy.
  4. Add the rum and vanilla extract, then mix to combine.
  5. Gradually add the melted butter while stirring continuously.
  6. Fold in the flour mixture until just combined.
  7. Add the chopped apples and gently fold them into the batter.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  9. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute the rum with apple juice or leave it out entirely.
  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for more depth of flavor.
  • The cake tastes even better the next day as the flavors develop.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for a richer dessert.
