This homemade focaccia bread recipe yields a fluffy, golden crusted Italian flatbread that’s perfect as a side dish, sandwich base, or appetizer. Infused with olive oil and herbs, it’s easy to make and packed with flavor.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 3/4 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • Flaky sea salt, for topping
  • Fresh rosemary (optional), for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour and kosher salt to the yeast mixture and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Add 1/4 cup of olive oil and mix until incorporated.
  4. Transfer the dough to a well-oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  6. Transfer the dough to the pan and stretch it to fit. Let it rise again for 30 to 45 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  8. Use your fingers to dimple the surface of the dough. Drizzle with remaining olive oil and sprinkle with flaky sea salt and rosemary if using.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use high-quality olive oil for the best flavor.
