Juicy, seasoned hamburger steaks simmered in a rich and savory onion gravy for a comforting Southern-style meal. Perfect served over mashed potatoes or rice for a hearty family dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for frying)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Shape into 4 equal-sized patties.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Cook for about 5 minutes until softened and lightly caramelized.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well, cooking for another minute.
  5. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Bring the gravy to a simmer, then return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the steaks are fully cooked and the gravy has thickened.
  7. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice, spooning extra gravy over the top.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add sliced mushrooms to the gravy while cooking the onions.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick, add a splash of beef broth to thin it out.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • This dish pairs well with green beans, buttered corn, or a simple side salad.
