These healthy mozzarella sticks are made with string cheese and baked to crispy perfection! They’re a lighter alternative to traditional fried mozzarella sticks, perfect for a snack or appetizer. Enjoy all the flavor with none of the guilt!

Ingredients

  • 6 string cheese sticks
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • Cooking spray (for baking)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with cooking spray.
  2. Cut each string cheese stick in half to make 12 shorter mozzarella sticks.
  3. In a shallow bowl, combine the whole wheat breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. In another shallow bowl, beat the egg.
  5. Dip each cheese stick into the egg, then roll it in the breadcrumb mixture until evenly coated. Repeat with all cheese sticks.
  6. Place the coated cheese sticks onto the prepared baking sheet, making sure they are spaced out evenly.
  7. Lightly spray the tops of the cheese sticks with cooking spray.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on them to avoid the cheese melting out.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool for a minute before serving.

Notes

  • Serve these mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
  • You can freeze the coated cheese sticks for later use. Simply freeze them in a single layer, and once frozen, store them in a ziplock bag. Bake directly from frozen when you’re ready to enjoy them (you may need to bake for an extra few minutes).
