A rich and hearty Italian meat sauce made with ground beef, Italian sausage, tomatoes, and aromatic herbs. Perfect for serving over pasta or using in lasagna.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 lb Italian sausage (casings removed)
  • 1 medium yellow onion (diced)
  • 4 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (or to taste)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp dried rosemary
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine (optional)
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves (chopped)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat a drizzle of oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and Italian sausage. Cook until browned, breaking up meat with a spoon.
  2. Add diced onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until soft. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Season with salt, pepper, oregano, thyme, rosemary, and red pepper flakes. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Pour in red wine (if using) and let simmer for 2-3 minutes to reduce slightly.
  5. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes. Stir in sugar and bring to a gentle boil.
  6. Reduce heat to low and let sauce simmer uncovered for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Stir in chopped basil just before serving. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

Notes

  • This sauce freezes well. Store in airtight containers for up to 3 months.
  • For a smoother sauce, blend with an immersion blender before adding basil.
  • You can use all beef or all sausage depending on preference.
  • Serve over your favorite pasta or use in baked dishes like lasagna.
