This Magic 4-Ingredient Potato Bake is a creamy, cheesy side dish made with simple ingredients—potatoes, French onion soup mix, thickened cream, and cheese. It’s a budget-friendly, flavorful dish perfect for family meals, potlucks, or holidays.
1 kg (2.2 lbs) potatoes, thinly sliced
300 ml (1¼ cups) thickened cream (heavy cream)
1 packet French onion soup mix (about 40g)
1 cup grated cheese (cheddar or your choice)
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the thickened cream and French onion soup mix. Stir until the soup mix dissolves.
Add the sliced potatoes to the cream mixture, ensuring each slice is coated.
Grease a baking dish and layer the potatoes, pouring any remaining cream mixture over the top.
Sprinkle grated cheese on top of the potatoes.
Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
Remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 20–30 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Variations:
Add fresh herbs (e.g., rosemary or thyme) for extra flavor.
Switch up the cheese for mozzarella or blue cheese for different tastes.
For a vegan version, use plant-based cream and vegan cheese.
