A perfect, easy-to-make breakfast that’s crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, these classic buttermilk waffles are a delicious way to start the day.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat the Waffle Iron:

    • Follow your waffle iron’s instructions for preheating. You can lightly grease it with oil or butter if needed (especially if it isn’t non-stick).
  • Prepare the Batter:

    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    • In another bowl, beat the eggs and then add the buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; it’s okay if the batter is slightly lumpy.
  • Cook the Waffles:

    • Lightly grease the preheated waffle iron if it is not non-stick.
    • Pour the appropriate amount of batter onto the waffle iron (this will vary depending on the size of your iron).
    • Close the waffle iron and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually for 3-5 minutes, until the waffles are golden brown and crisp.
  • Serve:

    • Once the waffles are done, remove them from the waffle iron and serve immediately.
    • Top with your favorite toppings, such as fresh berries, maple syrup, whipped cream, nuts, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Consistency of Batter: If the batter is too thick, you can add a little more buttermilk to reach your desired consistency. The batter should pour easily but not be too runny.
  • Make it Vegan: To make the waffles vegan, you can substitute the eggs with flax eggs (1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons of water for each egg) and use a plant-based milk (like almond or soy milk) along with dairy-free butter.
  • Toppings: These waffles are incredibly versatile, so feel free to top them with anything you like—fresh fruit, chocolate chips, whipped cream, or even peanut butter and bananas for a different twist!
