Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Colored sugar (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the egg and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.
  • Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  • Combine: Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, mixing until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.
  • Shape the Dough: Divide the dough in half. Roll each half into a log about 2 inches in diameter. Wrap the logs in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to 24 hours).
  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Slice the Cookies: Once the dough is chilled, slice each log into 1/4-inch thick slices. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to gently press into each slice for a more defined shape.
  • Bake: Place the cookie slices onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Cool and Serve: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Optionally, top with colored sugar or icing.

Notes

  • If you prefer softer cookies, bake for a shorter time, keeping an eye on them after 8 minutes.
  • You can decorate these cookies with royal icing or chocolate drizzle for extra flair.
  • These cookies can also be made ahead of time and frozen, making them a convenient treat for any occasion.
