Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey (preferably 93% lean)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (or almond flour for a gluten-free option)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for extra heat)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for grilling or pan-frying)
  • 4 whole wheat or brioche burger buns
  • For the Avocado Sauce:
  • 1 ripe avocado, mashed
  • 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon cilantro, chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the burgers: In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, red onion, garlic, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, or the burgers may become tough.
  • Form the patties: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, pressing them down slightly in the center to ensure even cooking.
  • Cook the burgers: Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Once hot, cook the patties for 5-6 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and the burgers are golden brown and cooked through.
  • Prepare the avocado sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mashed avocado, Greek yogurt, lime juice, chopped cilantro, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth and creamy.
  • Assemble the burgers: Toast the burger buns lightly on the grill or in a toaster. Spread the avocado sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Place the turkey patty on top and add any additional toppings you like, such as lettuce, tomato, or sliced jalapeños.
  • Serve: Top with the other half of the bun, and serve with your favorite side dishes, like sweet potato fries or a fresh salad.

Notes

  • If you prefer spicier burgers, you can add finely chopped jalapeños to the turkey mixture or top the burger with sliced jalapeños.
  • For a dairy-free option, substitute the Greek yogurt with dairy-free sour cream or skip it entirely in the avocado sauce.
  • Leftover cooked turkey burgers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated in the microwave or on the stove.
