Ingredients

  • For the Dough:
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk (preferably whole milk)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for rolling)
  • 1 egg
  • For the Cinnamon Filling:
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • For the Glaze:
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Stir and let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  • Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, milk, melted butter, sugar, salt, and egg. Gradually add the flour, mixing until the dough forms a ball. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Make the Cinnamon Filling: In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, sugar, and cinnamon until smooth. Set aside.
  • Shape the Twists: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a 1/4-inch thick rectangle (about 9×12 inches). Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the dough. Cut the dough into strips about 1-inch wide. Twist each strip and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake: Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the twists are golden brown and baked through.
  • Glaze: While the cinnamon twists bake, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl to make the glaze.
  • Glaze and Serve: Once the twists are out of the oven, drizzle the glaze over the warm twists. Serve immediately or let cool before enjoying!

Notes

  • For a more indulgent twist, add a handful of chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts) to the cinnamon filling.
  • These twists are best enjoyed fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • You can make the dough the night before and let it rise in the fridge overnight for a quicker morning prep.
