A warm, comforting apple crisp made without oats, featuring tender cinnamon-spiced apples beneath a buttery brown sugar crumble topping. Serve it warm for an easy classic dessert.

Ingredients

  • 5 medium green apples (peeled, cored, and thinly sliced, about 5 cups)
  • 2 teaspoons fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1½ Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter (cut into small cubes)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly spray an 8×8-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Add the sliced apples, lemon juice, granulated sugar, 1½ Tablespoons all-purpose flour, ¾ teaspoon cinnamon, optional nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to a large bowl. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  4. In a separate bowl, stir together 1 cup all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon salt.
  5. Add the cold cubed butter. Cut it into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter, two forks, or clean fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  7. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  8. Allow the apple crisp to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Green apples provide a tart flavor that balances the sweetness of the crumble topping.
  • Keep the butter cold until it is incorporated into the topping for the best crumbly texture.
  • Ground nutmeg is optional but adds extra warmth to the apple filling.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce if desired.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator and reheat before serving if desired.
