Ingredients
24 large candy canes
12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips (or candy coating)
12 oz white chocolate chips (or candy coating)
1 cup candy cane bits
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 250°F (120°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Lightly spray parchment paper with nonstick cooking spray.
Carefully unwrap the candy canes. Arrange them in pairs on the prepared baking sheets, positioning two candy canes facing each other to form a heart shape. Broken candy canes can be placed back together and fused during heating. For easier handling, work in batches of approximately four hearts at a time.
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven for 5–8 minutes, checking frequently. The candy canes should soften enough to bend without melting or losing their shape. Heating times may vary depending on the candy canes and oven.
Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven. While the candy canes are still warm and flexible, gently adjust them into heart shapes. Firmly press the ends together where the candy canes meet to fuse them into complete hearts. Use caution because the candy will be hot.
If the candy canes become too firm to shape, return the baking sheet to the oven for a few additional minutes. Once shaped, allow the hearts to cool completely at room temperature. Avoid refrigerating them during this stage, as condensation can make the candy sticky.
Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips and white chocolate chips in separate microwave-safe bowls. Microwave each in short intervals, stirring frequently until completely melted and smooth. Avoid overheating.
For single-flavor hearts, spoon melted semi-sweet or white chocolate into the center of each cooled candy cane heart. Spread the chocolate into an even layer, then immediately sprinkle crushed candy cane bits over the surface.
For swirled hearts, fill the center of a candy cane heart with one type of melted chocolate. Drizzle the contrasting chocolate over the top and gently drag a toothpick through both chocolates to create a decorative swirl. Sprinkle with crushed candy cane bits while the chocolate is still wet.
Repeat the filling and decorating process until all 12 candy cane hearts are completed.
Refrigerate the finished hearts for no longer than 10 minutes, just until the chocolate has completely set. Remove from the refrigerator and serve immediately or package for gifting.
Notes
Work in small batches of approximately four hearts so the softened candy canes remain flexible while shaping.
Watch the candy canes carefully in the oven. They should soften but not melt completely.
If a candy cane breaks while unwrapping, position the pieces together before heating so they can fuse when softened.
Use semi-sweet chocolate, white chocolate, or a combination of both to create different flavors and decorative patterns.
Chocolate candy coating can be substituted for chocolate chips for easier melting and setting.
Sprinkle crushed candy canes over the chocolate before it hardens to ensure the pieces adhere properly.
Do not refrigerate the candy cane hearts for extended periods because moisture and condensation can make the peppermint candy sticky.
Store finished hearts in an airtight container or individually sealed gift bags at room temperature, away from humidity.
In humid environments, food-safe silica gel packets may be placed inside the storage container to help keep the candy dry.
When properly stored in a cool, dry environment, Candy Cane Hearts can remain fresh for up to one month.
These festive treats make excellent Christmas gifts, holiday party favors, and edible decorations.
Nutrition information is estimated per heart, assuming the chocolate and candy cane bits are evenly distributed among 12 servings.
