Ingredients
1½ pounds lean ground beef (I used 90/10)
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
10.5 ounce can French onion soup
1 ounce packet French onion soup mix
1 cup unsalted beef broth
1 Tablespoon cornstarch
2 Tablespoons water
4 slices provolone cheese (for topping)
Instructions
In a bowl, add the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, breadcrumbs, egg, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until just combined.
Form the beef mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties.
Place the patties into a 4-6 quart oval slow cooker.
Pour the French onion soup over the patties and sprinkle the French onion soup mix on top.
Add the unsalted beef broth.
Cover and cook on low for 5-6 hours, until the patties are tender and cooked through.
In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water until smooth.
Stir the cornstarch slurry into the slow cooker and cook for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the gravy thickens.
Top each patty with a slice of provolone cheese. Cover and cook for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
Notes
Using unsalted beef broth helps control the saltiness because the French onion soup and soup mix already contain sodium.
Mix the ground beef only until combined to help keep the patties tender.
Serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, rice, or vegetables to make the most of the French onion gravy.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat with the gravy.
