Creamy garlic mashed potatoes made with tender potatoes, savory garlic, butter, and rich dairy. A comforting, flavorful side dish perfect for weeknight dinners and holiday meals.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup milk, plus more as needed
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
  • Fresh parsley or chives for garnish, optional

Instructions

  1. Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are very tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  2. Drain the potatoes well and return them to the pot.
  3. Add the garlic, butter, sour cream, milk, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Mash until smooth and creamy, adding a little more milk if needed to reach your preferred consistency.
  5. Taste and adjust the salt and pepper as needed. Serve warm, garnished with parsley or chives if desired.

Notes

  • Yukon Gold potatoes provide a naturally buttery texture, while russet potatoes make especially fluffy mashed potatoes.
  • Add milk gradually to avoid making the potatoes too thin.
  • Avoid overmixing the potatoes, which can make them gummy.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat gently with a splash of milk.
