Egg Custard is a timeless dessert cherished for its simplicity and comforting flavor. This classic treat combines basic ingredients to create a smooth and creamy custard that’s both satisfying and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare Custard Mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt until thoroughly combined.
  • Pour into Pie Plate: Transfer the mixture into a 9-inch pie plate.
  • Set Up Water Bath: Place the pie plate into a larger baking dish. Fill the larger dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the pie plate.
  • Bake: Carefully place the setup into the preheated oven and bake for approximately 45 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the custard cool before serving. Enjoy as is, or with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a dollop of whipped cream for added indulgence.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider using a combination of whole milk and half-and-half or cream.
  • To prevent a skin from forming on top of the custard as it cools, you can place a piece of plastic wrap directly on the surface.
  • This custard can be enjoyed warm or chilled, depending on your preference.
