This General Tso’s Chicken is a crispy, sweet, and slightly spicy Chinese-American takeout favorite made at home. It features battered and fried chicken pieces tossed in a bold, flavorful sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 2 eggs
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
  • 1 tbsp garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water (slurry)

Instructions

  1. Beat eggs in a bowl and dip chicken pieces to coat, then dredge in cornstarch until fully covered.
  2. Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium-high heat and fry the chicken in batches until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
  3. In a clean skillet or wok, heat 1 tbsp of oil and sauté minced garlic and red pepper flakes for about 30 seconds.
  4. Add sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, water, hoisin sauce, and sesame oil. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook until the sauce thickens.
  6. Add the fried chicken to the sauce and toss to coat evenly.
  7. Serve hot with steamed rice or vegetables.

Notes

  • Adjust the red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level.
  • Chicken breasts can be used instead of thighs for a leaner option.
  • Best served immediately to maintain crispiness.
  • Double the sauce if you prefer extra for drizzling over rice.
