Rich chocolate brownies are transformed into spooky miniature graveyards with cookie tombstones, green buttercream grass, and candy pumpkins. They make a fun and easy Halloween dessert for parties and celebrations.

Ingredients

  • Prepared brownie batter for an 8-inch square pan
  • 12 oval-shaped sandwich cookies, such as Milano-style cookies
  • Black edible decorating gel
  • 12 candy pumpkins
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons milk
  • A few drops of green food coloring

Instructions

  1. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper, leaving enough overhang on the sides to use as handles.
  2. Pour the prepared brownie batter into the lined pan and spread evenly. Bake according to the directions for your chosen brownie recipe or mix, approximately 30 minutes.
  3. Allow the brownies to cool completely. Lift them from the pan using the parchment paper and cut into 12 rectangular portions.
  4. Combine the powdered sugar, softened butter, and milk in a mixing bowl. Beat for about 2 minutes until smooth, light, and fluffy. Adjust the consistency with a little extra milk or powdered sugar if needed.
  5. Add a few drops of green food coloring to the buttercream and mix until evenly colored.
  6. Use black edible decorating gel to write RIP or another spooky message on each oval sandwich cookie. If desired, carefully trim a small piece from the bottom of each cookie to create shorter tombstones.
  7. Gently press one decorated cookie vertically into the upper portion of each brownie to create a tombstone.
  8. Spoon or pipe green buttercream around the base of each tombstone to resemble grass. Place one candy pumpkin on each brownie and serve.

Notes

  • Cool the brownies completely before cutting and decorating so the buttercream does not melt.
  • For a dirt effect, sprinkle crushed chocolate sandwich cookies around the tombstones.
  • Gummy worms, Halloween sprinkles, candy corn, or small fondant pumpkins can be added or substituted for the candy pumpkins.
  • Chocolate frosting can be spread over the brownies before adding the graveyard decorations.
  • Store decorated brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for about 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4–5 days.
  • For the crispest cookie tombstones, decorate the brownies on the day they will be served.
  • Undecorated brownies can be frozen in an airtight container and thawed completely before decorating.
