A sweet and tangy homemade cranberry sauce made with fresh cranberries, sugar, and citrus. This classic side dish is quick to prepare and far better than store-bought.

Ingredients

  • 340 g / 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 tbsp orange zest (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add cranberries and salt, then bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cranberries burst and the mixture thickens.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and orange zest if using.
  5. Allow the sauce to cool to room temperature; it will thicken further as it cools.
  6. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

  • Fresh or frozen cranberries both work well; no need to thaw frozen berries.
  • Adjust sugar to taste depending on desired sweetness.
  • Can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Great served chilled or at room temperature.
