This iced chai latte is made from a homemade spiced chai concentrate blended with milk and served over ice. Rich, aromatic, and lightly sweetened, it’s a refreshing coffeehouse-style drink made from scratch.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • 10 cardamom pods
  • 15 whole cloves
  • 4 whole star anise
  • 18 whole black peppercorns
  • 1/2 inch knob fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 1-inch strip orange peels
  • 1/2 cup honey (or maple syrup)
  • 8 black tea bags
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup homemade chai concentrate
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk recommended)
  • Whipped cream, optional

Instructions

  1. Lightly crush the cardamom pods, cloves, star anise, and black peppercorns using a mortar and pestle.
  2. Add the water, crushed spices, cinnamon sticks, ginger, orange peels, and honey to a medium saucepan. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from the heat.
  3. Add the black tea bags and steep for 20 minutes to 1 hour, depending on desired strength.
  4. Remove the tea bags and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Strain the chai concentrate through a fine sieve into a jar and refrigerate until completely chilled, about 1 hour.
  6. To serve, fill a glass with ice. Add 1/2 cup chai concentrate and 1/2 cup milk. Stir well and top with whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • The chai concentrate can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Maple syrup can be used instead of honey for a different flavor profile.
  • Adjust the milk-to-concentrate ratio to make the drink stronger or milder.
  • Use dairy-free milk for a lactose-free version.
