These classic Snowball Cookies are buttery, tender, and packed with finely chopped nuts before being coated in a generous layer of powdered sugar. Perfect for holiday baking, gifting, or enjoying with a warm cup of tea or coffee.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup finely chopped or ground pecans, walnuts, or almonds
  • Additional powdered sugar for coating

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. Cream the softened butter and powdered sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Mix in the vanilla extract and salt.
  4. Gradually add the flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
  5. Fold in the finely chopped or ground nuts until evenly incorporated.
  6. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them slightly apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the cookies are set and the bottoms are lightly golden while the tops remain pale.
  8. Cool the cookies for a few minutes until they are easy to handle.
  9. Roll the warm cookies in powdered sugar.
  10. Allow the cookies to cool completely, then roll them in powdered sugar a second time for a snowy finish.

Notes

  • Substitute pecans with walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, or pistachios.
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon almond extract for extra nutty flavor.
  • Mix in finely grated lemon or orange zest for a citrus variation.
  • Stir in mini chocolate chips for a sweeter twist.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom for warm spice.
  • For a nut-free version, replace the nuts with additional flour.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • Freeze baked cookies for up to 3 months and dust with fresh powdered sugar after thawing if desired.
