These Swicy Gyro Dogs combine the bold flavors of Mediterranean gyros with the fun of grilled hot dogs. Sweet-and-spicy glaze, creamy garlic sauce, and fresh toppings make this a standout meal for cookouts or family dinners.

Ingredients

  • Ground lamb
  • Ground beef
  • Grated yellow onion
  • Garlic
  • Dry bread crumbs
  • Fresh rosemary
  • Dried oregano
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Ground cumin
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Cold water
  • Split-top hot dog buns
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Thinly sliced red onion
  • Honey
  • Lemon juice
  • Sriracha hot sauce
  • Greek yogurt
  • Olive oil
  • Water (to thin as needed)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground lamb, ground beef, onion, garlic, bread crumbs, rosemary, oregano, salt, pepper, cumin, paprika, cayenne, cinnamon, and cold water. Mix until the mixture becomes sticky and well combined.
  2. Divide into 8 equal portions and shape each into a hot dog-sized log. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap.
  3. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  4. Prepare the glaze by mixing the honey, lemon juice, Sriracha, and cayenne pepper.
  5. Prepare the garlic sauce by combining Greek yogurt, garlic, lemon juice, salt, olive oil, and enough water to reach the desired consistency.
  6. Preheat a charcoal or gas grill to medium-high heat.
  7. Grill the gyro dogs, turning every few minutes until evenly cooked and firm. During the final minutes, brush several times with the glaze, allowing it to caramelize.
  8. Spread garlic sauce inside each bun. Add a grilled gyro dog, then top with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, and an extra drizzle of garlic sauce before serving.

Notes

  • Substitute all beef for a milder flavor if desired.
  • Add crumbled feta, lettuce, olives, or fresh herbs for extra flavor.
  • Harissa can replace Sriracha for a different spicy profile.
  • Store cooked gyro dogs refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze cooked or uncooked gyro dogs for up to 2 months.
  • Cook to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
