This traditional Irish Soda Bread is tender, lightly sweet, and easy to make with pantry staples. Raisins add a touch of sweetness, while buttermilk creates a soft crumb and classic flavor.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup raisins (optional)
  • 6 tablespoons very cold butter, cubed
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Prepare a lined baking sheet, lightly greased 9-10 inch cake pan, or a seasoned 12-inch cast iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Stir in the raisins if using.
  3. Add the cold cubed butter and cut it into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your hands until coarse crumbs form.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  6. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead gently until no dry flour remains. Shape into a round loaf and place in the prepared pan or skillet.
  7. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf. Bake for 30 minutes, then cover loosely with foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Transfer the bread to a cooling rack and allow it to cool for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Raisins can be omitted for a more traditional savory-style soda bread.
  • Do not over-knead the dough to keep the bread tender.
  • Serve warm with butter, jam, or alongside soups and stews.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
